How Did Sirens Do In Its First Weekend?
This week's show du jour is a top 5 launch worldwide for 2025.
Perhaps the the most talked-about show last week was Netflix’s Sirens starring Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock and Kevin Bacon. This family/class drama that focuses on the diverging lives of two sisters set in the world of the uber-rich seems like it is based on a novel but it is not. Fahy is on a roll staring in other buzzy shows of the last few years: The Perfect Couple, which is very similar to Sirens in tone and feel, and The White Lotus S2.
The chart below contains global viewing data from Netflix for the top english-language series during launch weekend for 2025TD. Sirens ranks fifth behind the Gabby Petito doc, Adolescence, Missing You (Harlan Coben), and Zero Day. It is ahead of other notable series such as XO Kitty, The Night Agent and The Four Seasons.
You might think that Adolescence is the top show of the year and that is true once additional viewing is accounted for. For two weeks of viewing or more it is the #1 show worldwide on Netflix for the year by 2x or more. It is unusual for a series to jump in rank to that degree even after week one.
I watched Sirens and enjoyed it but the ending feels rushed, abrupt and a little hard to believe given everything depicted leading up to the conclusion.
